We bet you didn’t know that that the founder of Renault cars was a very clever chap. Louis Renault was a cosseted boy with well-off parents and had a lot of time on his hands. Since he had a strong mechanical aptitude, what he did with his time was tinker with engines – and soon he invented the world’s first automobile gearbox, and then patented it. Strangely then, it was two of his brothers that founded the Renault motor company, though racing tragedy and a buyout eventually saw him end up at the helm. But that’s enough of the history lesson, let’s take a look at the current day line-up of Renault cars.
What we see in a Renault is a rather intriguing proposition. In general, they are a very good looking bunch of cars, sometimes exceptionally so. Then, when they go down the hot-hatch route, they are lightning quick. Renault have a fondness for using the Nissan 350 V6 engine – even in a variant of the Grand Espace MPV which will get you to 60 miles per hour in a breath over 8 seconds. No joke, that really is va va voom for something that seats seven people!
The best bet out of all the Renault cars here is the Clio. A best seller all around Europe, the top end models are amazingly fun and fast. Of course, with all Renault cars you also get the benefit of their experience powering the current Formula One world champion. A chance to look down your nose at Ferrari owners, perhaps?
