There are two examples of Proton cars here for you to discover: The GEN-2 and the Impian. Most of us are all too well aware that, in the past, Proton cars came from the bargain-bucket end of the market but they are attempting to spruce up their image and they have a majority share in Lotus so they may have a few tricks up their sleeve.
The Impian represents a step forward for Proton cars since it is their first from-scratch model ever. Previously they relied on raiding the Mitsubishi parts bin for odds and ends to attach to their motors, so we are pleased that they are raising their game. We are pleased too that the Impian in nearly every aspect is a remarkably decent car. Perhaps the pipe-smokers at Lotus have had an effect, since the Impian’s best feature is certainly its handling. But then again, perhaps they haven’t because the worst feature is the disturbing engine which makes noises the human ear shouldn’t have to endure. We understand a Renault 1.8 engine will be fitted fairly soon, so if you wait to take advantage of that you could have your hands on a very good car.
The GEN-2 tells us much the same story, with a sadder ending – helpful chaps from Lotus take a look at some Proton cars and make them handle like a dream – shame about the engine, and the interior is not as good as the Impian’s either.
For both these Proton cars we expect price depreciation to be quite scary so you shouldn’t get one if you like to change cars every 2-3 years – if you are going to keep hold of it for a fair while longer, the Impian might be worthwhile.
