Mini cars have an iconic status today but in its earliest incarnation in the 1950s, it was seen as a housewives special, built in response to the Suez crisis and the influx of bubble cars into the UK. In the 1960s however, it became de rigueur for the coolest of the cool to own one, and when Queen Elizabeth II was seen in one, sales of Mini cars took off into the stratosphere.

Be in no doubt that this is one of the most important vehicles in the history of the automobile. Voted Car Of The Century by Autocar, Number One Classic Car Of All Time by Classic and Sportscar magazine and European Car Of The Century by a prestigious selection of 130 international journalists, Mini cars have shifted well over 5 million units, making it the most popular British car of all time. In 2003, the Mini became the first European Car to win the North American Car Of The Year Award, and this year Glass’s Guide, the bible for pricing used cars, voted the Mini the Used Car Of The Year.

Practically all Mini cars have a 1.6 litre engine with a wide range of tuning to suit your driving style. The exceptions are the three diesel variants which all have 1.4 litres. If you want a bit of speed to practice your Italian Job driving skills, you’ll have to go for one of the Cooper S models, which you can also order as a head-turning convertible. There’s no doubt that the top-end Mini cars are some of the most fun things to drive in the whole universe.
