BMW began life in 1917 as an aeroplane engine manufacturer and the BMW badge is in fact designed to evoke the idea of a spinning propeller. Due to restraints under the Treaty of Versailles they chose to move on to making railway brakes, and it wasn’t until 1920 that they began producing…motorcycles. BMW cars did not roll off the production lines until 1929, and they sold somewhat over 5,000 cars in their first year. Whilst they were eventually able to resume their work on aeroplane engines, which were capable of powering transatlantic flights, and their motorbikes were setting world speed records, BMW cars still blazed a trail through the thirties and the beautiful 328 model was the most successful sports car of that decade. BMW have maintained a long racing tradition in nearly all competitive areas of motor sports. BMW cars are available in a very wide range of models, and if you need more power the M series cars souped up by BMW’s Motorsports division will prove more than adequate. The BMW 3 series in particular has been a firm favourite for many a year, and boasts a list of awards as long as your arm: Scottish Car Of The Year 2005; Car And Driver’s 10 Best; Best Sedan and Best Coupe – Auto Week Readers; Best Executive Car – Auto Express; and many more. BMW cars also have low depreciation and low running costs so whilst they are pricey compared with similar vehicles, they make sound financial sense in the long run.
