Citroen cars have long been known for technology and innovative methods. Their founder, Andre Citroen, was schooled in military vehicle mass-production methods during the First World War and he wasted no time in applying the lessons he learned to the manufacture of automobiles. The first Citroen cars appeared in 1919 and sold well. In the 20s, Citroen embraced the use of all-steel bodyshells while other car makers hesitated to make the change from using wooden bodies. This is just one example of the way Citroen cars have never been afraid to take a leap forwards.

Probably the most iconic of Citroen cars is the 2CV, first sold in 1949, which almost came to symbolise France itself. This was a low tech car for the people, packed with character, and sold in incredible numbers. Six years later, the DS19 appeared at the opposite end of the technological spectrum, featuring hydropneumatic suspension and power steering. On the day it was announced, it took 12,000 orders!

Coming to the modern day, Citroen cars still display the same flair for technological aptitude. The C4 features the world’s first moulded air bags designed to conform to the human anatomy, and together with the C5 it has the Lane Departure Warning System. As the name suggests, seat vibrations will alert you if cross the lines in the motorway. You never know when it could prove a life-saver.

Citroen cars also make the first mass-manufactured cars with Stop-Start technology. The C3 models are the first to make use of this highly efficient system, which puts the engine on standby-mode whilst your foot rests on the brake at traffic lights. It is estimated that this feature will cut your fuel consumption by about 10% and naturally you can turn the feature on or off at your discretion.
