Within a couple of years, Caterham were granted the status of an approved centre for the Lotus Seven and soon became sole distributors. In 1973, Caterham cars acquired the rights to produce the Seven when Lotus decided they wanted to beef up their image with a more practical range. Caterham reasoned that there were plenty of enthusiasts who would flock to buy a lightweight racer with awesome handling that could be assembled in a home garage, and history has proved them right.
