Drivers of new and used cars 'need to ensure tyres are safe'
26/02/2009
A significant number of motorists with new and Used Cars are driving around on dangerous tyres, it has been claimed.
Figures provided by the National Tyre Distributors Association revealed of the 60,000 vehicles tested last month, 7,000 had at least one tyre that did not meet legal minimum safety requirements.
According to TyreSafe, this may mean some 3.6 million new and used car could be at serious risk of being involved in an accident.
Furthermore, with many motorists looking to tighten their belts at the moment, the situation could become even worse.
A previous TyreSafe survey found one in ten vehicle owners plan to cut back on the amount spent on tyres this year compared with 2008.
Chairman Rob Beddis stated: "Drivers must re-evaluate their priorities and ensure that their tyres remain safe and legal."
Earlier this month, the Volkswagen group became the first vehicle manufacturer to demonstrate its commitment to road safety through joining TyreSafe.
