Morgan cars
Morgan cars conjure up images of an era of bakelite telephones, men throwing their hats into the air, joining up for King and Country and Terry Thomas saying “Ding Dong”. If someone told you Miss Marple had one, you wouldn’t quibble about the difference between reality and literature, you would merely nod and murmur “Of course...I remember now…and Richard Hannay…”.
This is not mere misty-eyed, sepia-tinted varnish. Allow us to put this apparently romanticised view into perspective with a startling fact. The Aero 8 series that was introduced in 2000 was Morgan cars’ first new model in sixty years. That’s back when Queen Elizabeth was still a princess.
We have five Morgan cars reviewed here, with refreshingly understated names. We don’t want any of your Pagoda Disquantras here, sir! No, we sell the Plus 4, the Plus 8, the Roadster, the 4/4 and the Aero 8. The name of the latter, we believe, has something to with a contraption called the aeroplane. So certain were the management that these new Aero 8s would be successful overseas, Morgan promptly earmarked 100 models for the American market.
It is becoming very clear that some people, somewhere, DO make them like that anymore. They’re called Morgan cars. And they have a hefty waiting list.
