Lexus Cars

Lexus cars are a subdivision of Toyota created especially to meet the needs of the luxury car market. The Lexus LS400 debut came in 1989 and it raised eyebrows around the world. Few manufacturers believed that a Japanese car could seriously challenge the existing luxury marques but the Lexus held its own alongside any of them. And it was cheaper. It had a big 4 litre V8 engine, sumptuous interior specs, could be driven for hours on end without losing comfort for driver or passengers and boasted one of the quietest rides around. Naturally it garnered award after award and Automobile magazine named it one of the Twenty-Four Most Important Automobiles of the Century.

Sixteen years on and the range of Lexus cars has expanded enormously. So what’s new? The LS 430 has inherited the 400’s mantle. A high-tech interior for the new century has been introduced with all the mod-cons you could think of and quite a few you haven’t. To bolster the Lexus cars line-up we have the IS range, aimed squarely at the BMW 3 series, though it doesn’t quite match up to the German mid-range meister (a powerful new engine coming in 2006 should see it close the gap). The GS series acts as vice-president to the LS’s CEO, the RX range is one of those SUV/estate crossovers that are very much in vogue nowadays, and to cap off the Lexus cars’ roster we have the SC luxury sports convertible.
