  • Mercedes C Class (00-07)

Recommended. A fine compact executive saloon, featuring big cabins and confident roadholding. Looks pricey next to BMW 3 Series and some engines unrefined.

  • Volvo S40 (96-04)

Average. It's safe, well built and there are some good engines in the range. The estate has more to offer but there is more value to be found elsewhere until the new version arrives.

  • Land Rover Discovery

Highly Recommended. Everything you'd expect a Land Rover to be - big, tough and great in the wilderness. Seven seat versions are impressively practical, too.

  • Land Rover Range Rover

Highly Recommended. Still the classiest SUV on the block and now with the option of a storming V8 diesel.

  • Mercedes E Class
