SummaryAverage. Hats off to Toyota for being one of the first manufacturers to offer a hybrid car that runs off both a standard petrol engine and electric motor. |
ReviewIf you can overlook the uninspiring shape then the ground-breaking Prius has plenty of surprises in store. Under the bonnet is an electric motor, it's mated to a conventional petrol engine that works in tandem to supply outstanding mpg. The Prius was launched to compete with the hybrid Honda Insight but the Toyota has the advantage of a back seat. Advances in diesel technology mean there are now equally frugal turbo diesels, so secondhand Prius values are not good. It's a big success in the USA where diesel cars are unknown, but in Europe it looks a bit like a solution looking for a problem.
