Review

The current generation Avensis has always majored on comfort and pretty much peerless insulation from the rigours of driving, and a recent set of minor revisions (including the arrival of several new engines) has helped to buff up its case for the medium term. But keener drivers will still look in vain for any kind of excitement in the uninterested driving dynamics.

The conservative styling still looks a bit dull compared to more visually interesting rivals, but the Avensis feels like a real quality item and the interior plastics and trim are a cut above those of pretty much all major competitors. The spacious cabin is a good place to spend time, thanks to a comfortable driving position and that brilliant motorway refinement - there's a distinct feeling of Toyota's sister Lexus brand about the way the Avensis devours long journeys. Rear seat space is good, too, with saloon, hatchback and estate variants all enjoying plenty of luggage space.

Driving dynamics are insipid, though - even supposedly sportier versions of the Avensis suffer from relatively dull-witted responses and limited amounts of grip. All engines offer decent performance, although it's hard to see too much point in the 1.8 litre or 2.0 litre petrol powerplants, considering how smooth and refined the diesel versions are. Range-topping T180 diesel is smooth, punchy and refined.

Breakdown

Styling 1 star

Minor facelift hasn't done much to alter the appearance of a very conservative car. Classy or dull - you decide.

Handling 1 star

Stodgy dynamics mean the Avensis is unlikely to top the list for enthusiastic drivers.

Comfort 1 star

Few cars soak up long journeys as well as an Avensis - quiet and refined at speed.

Quality & reliability 1 star

It feels far more solid and better assembled than any of its rivals - or pretty much anything of a similar size wearing a premium badge. Think poor man's Lexus.

Performance 1 star

Petrol engines give adequate performance, as do the lesser turbo diesel motors - but it's the range topping T180 diesel that comes closest to delivering excitement.

Roominess 1 star

Spacious inside front and rear - estate has impressive luggage capacity, too.

Running costs 1 star

Diesels turn in decent fuel economy and other running costs are class competitive, although it's worth noting that the Avensis retains a higher percentage of its value than its more downmarket rivals. A semi-sensible private new buy.

Value for money 1 star

Strong equipment across the board, with loads of toys on the range-toppers. Offers very respectable value compared like-for-like with rivals.

Stereo / Sat nav 1 star

Stereo offers good sound quality, but the optional satnav system lacks a full colour screen and is tricky to use.
