New car tax expected in budget

11/03/2008
It is expected that the chancellor will introduce new green taxes this week that will try to encourage new car buyers to purchase a more eco-friendly model.

According to Easier Motoring, this week's budget could see Alistair Darling bring in a tax on new cars that could add around £2,000 to the cost of vehicles considered to be high in CO2 emissions.

The move has been commented on by British Car Auctions (BCA), which found in a recent study that around 19 per cent of new car buyers would consider a car with lower emissions and 16 per cent said they would buy a small car.

Tim Naylor, public relations manager at BCA, said: "Left to their own devices, little is going to change UK motorists' habits."

"Perhaps the measures predicted to be announced in this week's Budget will make green intentions more of a reality."

London mayor Ken Livingstone has also announced plans recently to increase the congestion charge for vehicles emitting high levels of CO2 in the capital.
