Summary

Recommended. Handsome, classy coupé and convertible. Exclusive, but expensive for what you get.

Review

With its combination of elegant styling and a ultra-smooth driving experience, the CLK is one of the most desirable coupés on the market - although it comes with pricetags to match.

It certainly looks the part - sleek, elegant and sporty. Inside the well-finished cabin draws on a combination of design themes and components from the C Class and E Class. It's reasonably spacious and comfortable for occupants in the front, although the standard seats are a little lacking in support. There's not much room in the back and access requires an awkward scramble. On the plus side, the boot is a decent size by coupe standards.

On the road the CLK drives very well. It's smooth, comfortable and very refined at cruising speeds, yet it's also capable of putting in a very credible performance over a twisty road thanks to an agile, responsive chassis. The fine-looking cabriolet is also impressively quiet and well insulated with the roof up. The sometimes clunky manual gearbox is worth avoiding, though.

Buyers have a comprehensive range of engines to choose between. The entry level supercharged 200 "Kompressor" motor gives decent performance, but it's a bit coarse-sounding when worked hard. The V6 petrols give creamy smooth performance, while the range-topping 500 V8 and AMG versions are very rapid if you can afford the fuel and insurance bills.

Two excellent diesel powerplants are also available for the coupe, with the entry-level 220 CDI delivering an impressive combination of performance and economy while the brawnier 320 CDI V6 is seriously rapid.

Breakdown

Styling 1 star

Handsome, elegant and restrained - the CLK has got what it takes to turn heads. Cabriolet looks even better than the coupe.

Handling 1 star

The compliant chassis delivers agile responses when the going gets bendy - impressive considering how smooth and refined the rest of the driving experience is.

Comfort 1 star

Effortlessly wafty when it comes to high speed cruising - the CLK is a great way to devour motorway miles. It's supple over rougher roads, too. Standard seats are a bit lacking in lateral support, though.

Quality & reliability 1 star

Built to the sort of high standards you'd expect from a Merc with the cabin featuring lots of expensive-feeling materials.

Performance 1 star

Basic Kompressor four-cylinder engine is a bit loud but all the other petrol powerplants give very refined performance. Diesels are impressive, especially the punchy 320 CDI V6 version.

Roominess 1 star

Respectable by coupé standards, but it will still feel tight for anyone swapping from a normal family car. Limited legroom in the back, but the boot is a decent size by segment standards.

Running costs 1 star

Servicing and insurance are expensive but impressively rigid residuals (especially for the diesel) mean the CLK isn't disastrously expensive to run.

Value for money 1 star

The CLK looks pricey compared to its main rival, the BMW 3 Series coupe. At least automatic gearboxes are standard on V6 and V8 versions.

Stereo / Sat nav 1 star

Excellent audio system delivers strong performance, with a variety of upgrades available. Satnav is easy to follow and works well.
