SummaryAverage. Much-improved space and specification, but desperately short of charisma - except for the dramatic Type R, that is.

ReviewThe Civic may be big on space but it ain't big on beauty. In mini people-carrier style, its floor is totally flat, but although this gives impressive space, the feeling from the fairly standard seats is one of detachment and discomfort. The VTEC engines offer keen performance if you really work hard and the build quality is good, but there's better out there in the shape of the Ford Focus and Renault Megane. Now the high-performance Type R is a different game altogether - super-swift, eye-catching and big on thrills. It's a shame the models are so far removed from each other. The 1.7 diesel was a welcome addition to the line-up but a futuristic new generation model is due.
