Summary

Not recommended. Ford's chunky 4x4 has plenty of space and two good engines to choose from. It's driving qualities are let down by bland styling and trim.

Review

The Maverick is a perfectly capable off-roader but it just isn't that exciting to look at. The dull image means it won't stand out in a crowd like the pretty Toyota RAV4 and popular Land Rover Freelander. Both V6 petrol and 2.0 turbodiesel engines are available - the petrol model is surprisingly quick and handles well but in automatic form the gear stick is mounted badly on the dashboard. It's a big vehicle and interior space meets expectations, although headroom is a bit tight in the back. All in all, you get the feeling Ford could have done better.
