SummaryAverage. A good, unpretentious family car that has been crucial to Citroen's assault on the value-driven market. Price and equipment levels keen. |
ReviewA completely unexciting prospect kept relevant by excellent standard equipment and pricing. 2000 facelift gave a distinctly ugly headlight and grille treatment, but otherwise it's hard to be either offended or excited by the Xsara. Base 1.4 petrol engine needs to be worked too hard to make decent progress, but the 1.6 unit is good and the HDI turbo diesel engines are among the best in the segment. Cramped cabin and poor noise insulation show the Xsara's considerable age - based on the 1991 ZX - but with the inevitable 'cashback' special offers basic versions are still compelling value.
