Summary

Recommended. AMERICAN MARKET MODEL - One of this season's must-have cars on the other side of the Atlantic, Cadillac's handsome XLR roadster features an electrically operated folding hardtop, distinctive styling and V8 power.

Review

Most will agree that this is a fine-looking car, and was actually designed by a team led by Brit Simon Cox, although some will take against the angular styling. Performance is delivered by an appropriately powerful 4.6 litre 'Northstar' V8, which drives the rear wheels through a silky five-speed automatic transmission. It rides and handles well, too, thanks in large part to chassis underpinnings shared with the new sixth generation Chevrolet Corvette including that car's 'Magnetic' electronically variable dampers. There are only two seats but interior space is decent with the roof up, although the cabin's materials and finish can't match the quality vibes of rivals like the Lexus SC430 or Mercedes SL. Traditionally, US luxury convertibles have struggled over here, but this is their most serious effort yet.
