"Green is the new black" for new cars

14/03/2008
Those buying a new car are more concerned about its eco-friendly credentials than how sporty and sexy it is, a new survey suggests.

According to AA Personal Loans, the number of drivers purchasing a new car for its sex appeal has declined by 67 per cent in the last two years, while 23 per cent looking to buy a vehicle say they want one that is more environmentally friendly.

This figure compares to the six per cent of motorists who wanted a greener car in January 2006.

It was also found that in addition to people wanting eco-friendlier cars, fewer consumers want to purchase a higher fuel-consuming multi-purpose vehicle.

Fewer drivers are looking for sportier models, it also discovered. Head of AA Personal Loans Mark Huggins suggested that to maximise their savings on greener cars, people should ensure they look around for the best car finance deal.

"The research shows that green is the new black for many motorists," he added. "Car buyers now realise that 'green' cars mean 'lean' cars with better fuel economy and cheaper tax discs."

Those thinking about buying an eco-friendlier car may also want to consider purchasing a hybrid.
